Baxter’s Ambulatory Infusor for Post-Operative Pain Management Helps Reduce Hospital Length-of-Stay
As the healthcare system grapples to clear the pandemic surgical backlog and open hospital beds for other critically ill patients, many Canadian organizations have adopted the use of Continuous Peripheral Nerve Block (CPNB) for post-operative pain management. Effective post-operative pain management is a priority for clinicians and patients that helps reduce hospital length-of-stay and there are opportunities to expand the use of CPNB in Canada.
Continuous Peripheral Nerve Block techniques provide pain control for a variety of surgical procedures with the insertion of a catheter near the target nerve bundle that acts as a conduit for continuous local anesthetic infusion.
As a CPNB device for pain management, Baxter’s Elastomeric Infusors are also used to deliver ambulatory chemotherapy and were recently expanded to deliver antibiotic therapy. Infusors are single-use, disposable, non- electronic medication infusion pumps offering patients improved autonomy, and facilitates the transition of care from hospital to home. Each device is manufactured without latex or DEHP, and pre-set flow rates eliminate the potential for human error in programming the infusion. A hard outer shell and one-way valve prevents accidental over-infusion and medication diversion.
The benefits of CPNB extend beyond the management of acute post-surgical pain that include: decreased baseline pain, reduced additional analgesic requirements and subsequent opioid use and related side effects, increased patient satisfaction, improved mobility and joint flexibility, quicker hospital discharge, and reduced overall healthcare costs.
